The Waitomo Caves are nothing short of spectacular, unbelievable to see the thousands of tiny glowworms shimmering from the cave roof top and the amazing limestone formations. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the caves and Maori culture his presentation was both educational and fun. This is a must see for anyone visiting New Zealand.

It's great to learn about a culture, especially from the people who lives it. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, from the performance to the night walk...... best part is we don't feel this is being commercialised but rather a very educational experience. Keep it this way please......

It was a wonderful relaxing experience. As a reminder, you will need to wash you swim suit and towels several times (and your hair) before the residual smell is gone, but we didn't mind. I would suggest renting suits and towels there to avoid having to wash your things.

Mud Pools & Steaming Craters

Watch thick geothermal mud bubble and pop as underground gases push through the surface, creating constantly shifting volcanic textures.

Lady Knox Geyser

Located just outside the main park area, this famous geyser erupts daily, shooting hot water up to 20 meters into the air in a dramatic geothermal display.

Tips & guidelines

  • Plan 1.5–2 hours to comfortably explore the walking trails at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. The loops vary in length, so allow time for photo stops and viewpoints.
  • Arrive before 10:15am if you want to watch the daily eruption of the Lady Knox Geyser before entering the main park.
  • Start with the longer trail loops first, then finish with highlights like the Champagne Pool and Devil’s Bath near the end.Visit earlier in the day for stronger mineral colors—sunlight and cooler temperatures make the geothermal pools appear more vibrant.
  • Expect a mild sulfur smell in some areas; it’s a natural part of geothermal activity and fades as you move along the trails.
  • Stay on marked paths and boardwalks—the ground is thermally active and stepping off the trails is unsafe.
  • Drones are not permitted inside the geothermal park to protect wildlife and visitor safety.
  • Wear closed shoes and bring water; the geothermal trails involve gravel paths and limited shade.
  • If you’re visiting via combo or day tours with Hobbiton Movie Set or Waitomo Glowworm Caves, keep your schedule tight as tour timings are usually fixed.
