We had the guide walk us through the park and he was excellent and very informative about the park and all its ponds. The sulpher bath and rubbing the mud on us was fun and think I am still getting it off my body and clothes.

It's great to learn about a culture, especially from the people who lives it. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, from the performance to the night walk...... best part is we don't feel this is being commercialised but rather a very educational experience. Keep it this way please......

Arrival at Hell’s Gate

Step into Rotorua’s wild geothermal reserve at Hell’s Gate. Walk the wooden boardwalk, grab your free map, and get up close to boiling mud pools and roaring steam vents. Guided-only tours run at 10:30am and 2:30pm.

Explore geothermal walking trails

Stroll the geothermal walk at Hell’s Gate, passing bubbling mud pools, erupting fumaroles, and ochre land-coral formations. See New Zealand’s largest hot waterfall and an active mud volcano, all along ancient boardwalk trails.

Discover Māori cultural heritage

Watch authentic Māori carving inside a traditional wharenui and learn age-old geothermal healing practices. Learn the local legends behind steaming vents and sulfur cliffs with knowledgeable storytelling guides. Nature and heritage come together in one powerful experience.

Indulge in a mud bath ritual

Unwind with Hell’s Gate’s signature mud bath and sulphur spa. Coat up in warm, mineral-rich mud, then soak in the sulphur pool. Messy, relaxing, and deeply soothing, towels included, no long waits.

Enhance your visit with add-ons

Upgrade your visit with the Twilight Spa at Hell’s Gate, a 90-minute evening mud bath by torchlight. Soak under the stars for a quieter, more atmospheric finish. This is an optional add-on; book early to secure your spot.

Things to know before you book Hell’s Gate tickets

  • Ticket types: You can book geothermal walk entry, guided geothermal tours, mud bath and sulphur spa experiences, or combination options. Twilight Spa is available as an evening upgrade on selected days.
  • Booking window: The park opens daily. Guided geothermal tours run at 10:30am and 2:30pm and must be booked in advance. We recommend booking early, especially for guided tours and Twilight Spa, as spots are limited.
  • What’s included: All tickets include entry to the geothermal reserve. Depending on the option you choose, your visit may also include access to the mud bath and sulphur spa, Māori carving demonstrations, and cultural storytelling. Towels are provided for spa experiences. Transfers are optional and must be selected at checkout.
  • Entrance & arrival flow: You’ll enter through the main visitor centre, with easy access from the on-site car park. If you book transfers, pick-up and drop-off operate from central Rotorua locations, making arrival and departure straightforward.
  • Ways to explore: You can explore at your own pace on a self-guided walk using the free map provided at entry, or join a guided tour for deeper insight into the geothermal activity, Māori history, and local legends.
  • Duration: If you’re short on time, the guided tour takes about 1 hour. For a relaxed visit, set aside 1–1.5 hours for the geothermal walk. If soaking is your priority, plan 1.5–2 hours for the mud bath and sulphur spa, or choose the Twilight Spa if you want a slower, evening experience; it runs for 90 minutes.
  • Transport & pick-up: You can self-drive and park on site, or book round-trip shuttle transfers for any of the three experiences. Shuttle pick-up and drop-off are available within the Rotorua central area and must be booked separately in advance, as same-day requests are not guaranteed.
  • Policies & important rules: Please note that mud bath sessions are limited to 20 minutes per guest, and children under 2½ years are not permitted in the mud bath areas. Remove jewellery before entering the mud or pools to avoid tarnishing, and follow all staff instructions at all times for safety around the geothermal features.
  • Booking ahead ensures you get your preferred experience and time slot, especially during weekends and peak travel periods.

Tips & guidelines for visiting Hell’s Gate

  • Join a guided tour: If you want context and stories behind the landscape, book the guided walk at 10:30am or 2:30pm. It’s the best way to understand the geothermal features and Māori connections.
  • Time your arrival well: Arriving earlier in the day is quieter and cooler, and the steam activity is often at its best for viewing and photos.
  • Dress for the experience: Wear sturdy walking shoes for the geothermal trails and bring old swimwear; sulphur and mud can stain fabrics.
  • Plan enough time: Allow 2.5–3 hours if you’re combining the geothermal walk with the mud bath and sulphur spa, so you’re not rushed.
  • Go self-guided if you prefer flexibility: If you like moving at your own pace, grab the free map at the entrance and explore the boardwalks independently.
  • Book transfers early: Round-trip shuttle transfers from Rotorua central must be booked in advance and are ideal if you don’t want to drive.
  • Check spa timing: Mud bath sessions are time-limited, so arrive at the spa area promptly at your allocated slot.
  • Protect your belongings: Use the on-site lockers and remove all jewellery before entering the mud or pools to prevent tarnishing.
